Business Chemistry (Master)

Start of studies planned for winter semester 2025/2026. Applications are expected to be possible from May 2025.

Business Chemistry combines the subjects of Business Administration and Chemistry and is based on the leitmotif of the Circular Economy at Clausthal University of Technology. In addition to in-depth subjects, for example in the fields of technical and organic chemistry, market processes and logistics, you will acquire skills in patent law and gain experience in an industrial internship. You can choose your specialization from a broad spectrum of different subjects, ranging from employment law to sustainability management, material analysis and the chemistry of beer brewing to the planning and construction of chemical plants.

Job profile and labor market

Due to their combined knowledge of the natural sciences of chemistry and economics, business chemists have excellent career opportunities. They are qualified for responsible management tasks at the interface between research and management because they combine scientific thinking with economics and can profitably combine the technical communication of both subjects. Business chemists are therefore qualified to fill key positions of responsibility, for example as team members of management or management levels for the international chemical industry as well as for companies with cross-industry value chains such as the automotive or recycling industry. The fields of activity of industrial chemists are as diverse as the internationally active branches of industry themselves.

  • Drug development
  • Dye design
  • Production or processing of polymers
  • Development of intelligent materials for the energy sector
  • Environmental protection and recycling
  • Quality, science and product management
  • Marketing and consulting
  • Strategic consulting in research and development.

What makes the degree program in Clausthal special

Clausthal's chemistry department traditionally has good contacts with industry, which means that many of our courses in business chemistry are also directly related to practice. Clausthal University of Technology is one of the most international universities in Germany and is known and appreciated for its excellent student support. The Master's degree program in Business Chemistry is bilingual and thus trains students in the international scientific language of English for their career in the chemical industry, which also operates internationally, and the related branches of industry.

Structure of the study program

In addition to compulsory modules in chemistry and economics, the Master's degree program in Business Chemistry offers a wide range of electives that allow you to deepen your knowledge or extend it to related subject areas, for example from the engineering sciences.

  • Chemical reaction engineering
  • Project Management
  • Organic synthesis
  • Quality management
  • Patent law
  • Market processes
  • Instrumental Analysis
  • Supply Chain Management
  • Recycling
  • Polymer chemistry

Industriepraktikum

An 8-week industrial internship is planned.

starting your studies

Welcome Weeks (before the start of lectures)
The Clausthal University of Technology supports the start of studies with various event formats.

Pre-course in mathematics (before the start of lectures)
The Institute of Mathematics offers a pre-course in mathematics for Bachelor's degree programmes. Master's students who would like to refresh their mathematics knowledge are also welcome to attend this course.

Prerequisites

The admission requirement is a Bachelor's degree or an equivalent degree in business administration or a closely related field of study. The decision as to whether a previous course of study is suitable in terms of subject is made by the entrance examination board, which determines the type and scope of the relevant subject requirements in the form of minimum entry requirements and other necessary knowledge.
