Research assistants (m/f/d)

A new job vacany is available at the Institute for Software and Systems Engineering at Clausthal University of Technology as

Research assistants (m/f/d)
in the research group Emerging Technologies for the Circular Economy

The ETCE-Lab (Emerging Technologies for the Circular Economy Lab – etce-lab.com) at the Clausthal University of Technology conducts interdisciplinary research at the intersection of computer science and sustainability. Our research focus includes the development and conceptual design of dynamic, adaptive and self-organizing software systems, digital identities as well as digital technologies facilitating the circular economy. Related concepts, such as circular societies, go beyond economic means; they circulate and redistribute wealth, knowledge, technology and power throughout society.

The research position is part of the “Zukunftslabor Circular Economy” (Circular Economy Future Lab) and focuses on a holistic, digitalised view of the lifecycle of products, their components and materials. A key aspect of the circular economy is to preserve resources in their purest and most valuable form and to minimise losses. At the end of the lifecycle, the resources originally invested should be reusable or replaced by equivalent resources. This promotes the waste avoidance and creates long-term resource security at low cost. To achieve this, material flows must be tracked in detail through the Circular Economy cycles, technically analysed, and efficient take-back and recycling processes must be established.

The focus of our work packages is on the development of processes and tools for the analysis and evaluation of material, value and product flows in the context of electrical appliances in order to determine and manage the availability and demand for critical raw materials. Moreover, we deal with the improvement of suitable take-back structures and incentivisation of the return by the user, as well as the subsequent development of said information by means of intelligent and digitalisation-driven recycling processes and technologies.

Your main tasks will be:

  • Requirements definition, elicitation and documentation
  • Conceptualisation of digital systems and services
  • Developing and modelling AI-driven solution
  • Implementation of concepts and processes
  • Publishing your research results at national and international conferences
  • Support in the preparation of lectures, supervision of exercises and scientific work by students

Requirements:

  • You are passionate about sustainability and averting the climate catastrophe
  • You have a Master’s degree or Diploma in a computer science or a related field
  • You are able to work independently and in a structured manner, and you quickly grasp new concepts
  • You are interested in scientific work in a cross-domain context
  • Your proficiency level in English is at least B2 in spoken and written form
  • Your proficiency level in German is at least B2 in spoken and written form
  • Experience in project management or scientific project-based research work

Experience in the following areas is desirable:

  • Python and web development
  • Background in (urban) mining
  • Data visualization

We offer:

  • Salary according to TV-L E13 (full-time or part-time), including special annual payment as part of the TV-L

  • Flexible working hours
