Academic Researcher (m/f/d)

The Energy Informatics lab at Technische Universität Clausthal solicits applications for

one doctoral researcher (m/f/d)

to support the group's research and teaching activities. The position is full-time, remunerated according to the German TV-L E13 scheme, and offered for an initial duration of one year with an option to extend the duration by another three years later. The willingness to complete a doctoral degree is expected. A part-time employment is generally possible.

Research profile:

Biodiversity is an important indicator of ecosystem resilience. However, current solutions for determining biodiversity rely almost exclusively on manual identification and counting procedures that are not only time-consuming, but also require distinct taxonomic expertise. You will be developing an embedded sensing system that can autonomously identify insect species based on the acoustic signals they emit, using methods from the domain of artificial intelligence. The specific tasks to be tackled include:

  • Design and develop an embedded measurement system to collect acoustic data for the detection of species in shared habitats
  • Process the measurements taken in laboratory-scale tests with insect populations of different sizes and species to train AI models for insect species detection
  • Evaluate the performance of the developed sensing system in real-world tests
  • Communicate the achieved scientific results in conference and journal publications as well as presenting them during project meetings

Required prerequisites:

  • Completed academic degree (M.Sc or equivalent) in computer science, information technology, electrical engineering, or a biodiversity-related subject
  • Team player with the capacity to conduct self-guided scientific work
  • Keen to tackle interdisciplinary application problems and interact with scientists from other disciplines
  • Good written and spoken communication skills in English and/or German

The position is remunerated according to the German TV-L salary scheme and includes an annual bonus payment at the end of each year. In addition, we offer a supplementary pension scheme (VBL).
