Academic Researcher (m/f/d)

In the Research Group for Geomechanics and multiphysics Systems (GemS) of the Technical University of Clausthal we offer one position as

Research associate/PhD student (m/f/d)

(in case of fulfilment of the personal requirements:13 TV-L – 100%)

for an initial period of 3 years in full time. In the frame of the occupation the opportunity to acquire a PhD will be offered. The position is basically suitable for part-time occupation.

The focus of research at the Chair of Geomechanics and Multiphysical Systems is the material behavior of geomaterials, taking into account thermal, hydraulic, biological and chemical interactions. In order to describe and predict the coupled response of bedrock and rock mass under different conditions and across scales, theoretical, numerical and laboratory aspects must be taken into account. The applications are mainly in the areas of nuclear deposition, energy storage and energy production. As part of one of GemS's research priorities, new, targeted simulation strategies are to be developed. To simulate multiphysical processes in the subsurface and their influence on the mechanical response of geomaterials, flexible, suitable simulators are required that must be constantly further developed and expanded. Strong parallelization and efficient solution strategies are necessary.

Your main tasks are:

  • Participation in the development of FEM simulators for multiphysical processes with application to geomaterials.
  • Validation and verification of the above simulators.
  • Participation in the development of mathematical models to describe the multiphysical interactions in the subsurface.
  • Benchmarking and comparison of different simulators.

Your profile:

  • An above-average Master's degree (or equivalent) in geosciences, civil engineering, applied sciences or comparable courses with an in-depth background in geomechanics, mathematics or physics.
  • In addition to a very good knowledge of German, a very good command of the English language is also expected.
  • Analytical, structured and independent way of working as well as strong teamwork skills.
  • Experience in working with software and programming (Python, C++, Matlab etc.) is desirable.

We offer:

  • A responsible and varied area of responsibility,
  • an open and appreciative working atmosphere in the exciting and forward-looking working environment of a technical university at the interface between research, teaching, administration and ministry,
  • a collectively agreed remuneration in accordance with the collective agreement for the public service of the Länder (TV-L), as well as an annual special payment in accordance with the TV-L at the end of the year and a separate supplementary pension as a company pension (VBL),
  • family-friendly working conditions (e.g.flexible working time arrangements, childcare services, part-time employment),
  • all the advantages of employment in the public sector.

TU Clausthal supports the compatibility of career and family through flexible working time models within the framework of the possibilities offered by the service and is a member of the university association "Family in Higher Education".

Equality with its facets of equal opportunities, diversity and family friendliness is an important concern at Clausthal University of Technology. People with disabilities are given priority if they are suitable. Applications from people of all nationalities are welcome.
